There are six jumpers available for configuration. Three of these
jumpers, E1, E2, and E3, are used to select the drive's SCSI ID,
while E4 (installed) disables parity. Jumpers E5 and E6 are used to
enable either the spindle synchronization signal, or LED, respect-
  ively.

 -----------------

 E4 OPEN Parity check enabled
        CLOSED Parity check disabled

There are three removable terminators: RP1, RP2, and RP3. They can be
removed from the drive, if bus termination is provided elsewhere in
 the system.

 E5 Spindle Synchronization
 ---------------------------
For use in Disk Arrays, a spindle synchronization feature is
provided. Spindle synchronization between drives is accomplished by
connecting a cable to J4 on each of the drives. Up to twelve disk
drives may be connected, and the method used to implement synchroni-
zation does not require a designated master drive.

To construct the cable, a 4-conductor ribbon cable and 14-pin dis-
placement connector (Molex part number 15-47-3142 or equivalent) are
required. Install the required number of connectors on the ribbon
cable with the four conductors in pin position 1-4 (pin positions
 5-14 are unused).

To install the completed cable, connect the 14-pin displacement
connector to J4 of each drive. Align pin one of the connector with
pin one of J4. Install jumper E5 on each drive to enable spindle
 synchronization.

The drive may be mounted in any attitude!

 Recommended Mounting Configuration
 ----------------------------------
The Astec disk drives are designed to be used in applications where
the units may experience shock and vibrations at greater levels than
 larger and heavier disk drives.

 Shock Tolerance Features
 ------------------------
The features which allow greater shock tolerance are the use of
rugged media and shock mounts. To take full advantage of the shock
mounts, it is necessary to provide a minimum of 0.1 inch clearance
on both the top and sides of the drive. This clearance allows for
movement of the drive during accleration.

 Mechanically Isolated Mounting Points
 -------------------------------------
Ten base mounting points are provided to the customer. Each
mounting point is mechanically isolated from the head/disk assembly.
The drive is mounted using 6-32 screws; 1/8" max. insertion for the
sides, and 1/4" max. insertion for the bottom. The system integrator
should allow ventilation to the drive to ensure reliable drive
operation over the operating temperature range.

For additional vibration isolation, an external suspension system
 may be used.

 Cable Requirements
 ------------------
A 50-conductor flat cable or 25-conductor twisted pair cable is re-
quired. The maximum cable length is 6.0 meters (19.68 ft).

The cable characteristic impedance should be 132 ohms 10% with a
minimum conductor size of 28 AWG.

 Connector Requirements
 ----------------------
The drive connector is a 50-conductor connector which consists of
two rows of 25 male pins on 100 mil centers.

The cable connector is a 50-conductor non-shielded connector which
consists of two rows of 25 female contacts on 100 mil centers.

 Power Connector
 ---------------
The drive has a 4-pin DC power connector (J3) mounted on the PCB.
The recommended mating connector is AMP part number 1-480424-0
utilizing AMP pins (part number 350078-4 or equivalent).

 Electrical Description
 ----------------------
The Astec family of drives uses open collector drivers. All assigned
signals are terminated with 220 ohms to +5 volts and 330 ohms to
ground. The termination resistors are removable for multi-device
 configurations.

 Cabling
 -------
Connect the power cable to J3. Connect the SCSI interface cable to
J2. Bus termination is required on the last device of the SCSI bus.

 Diagnostic Routines
 -------------------
The microprocessor performs diagnostics upon application of power.
If an error is detected, the drive will not come ready.

 SCSI Termination
 ----------------
There are three removable terminators; RP1, RP2 and RP3. They can be
removed from the drive if bus termination is provided elsewhere in
 the system.

 Magnetic Field
 --------------
The disk drive will meet its specified performance while operating in
the presense of an externally produced magnetic field under the
 following conditions.
   +------------------+------------------+
   |Frequency | Field Intensity|
   +------------------+------------------+
   | 0 to 700 Khz | 6 gauss maximum|
   | 700Khz to 1.5Mhz | 1 gauss maximum|
   +------------------+------------------+

 Acoustic Noise
 --------------
The sound pressure level will not exceed 40 dBA at a distance of 1
 meter from the drive.

 Seek Times
 ----------

       +----------------------------------+--------+
       |Track-to-Track msec. | 8 |
       +----------------------------------+--------+
       | Average msec. typ. | 25 |
       | Average msec. max. | 45 |
       +----------------------------------+--------+
       |Latency msec. avg. | 8.4 |
       +----------------------------------+--------+
The timing is measured through the interface with the drive
operating at nominal DC input voltages. The timing also
assumes that the I/O driver overhead and system hardware de-
pendency have been subtracted from timing measurements.
The average seek time is determined by averaging the seek time
for a minimum of 1000 seeks of random length over the surface
       of the disk.

 Output Characteristics
 ----------------------
Each signal driven by the drive has the following output character-
istics when measured at the drive connector:

  +--------------------------------+----------------------------+
  |Signal Assertion | 0.0 VDC to 0.4 VDC |
  +--------------------------------+----------------------------+
  |Minimum Driver Output Capability| 48ma (sinking) at 0.5 VDC |
  +--------------------------------+----------------------------+
  |Signal Negation | 2.5 VDC to 5.25 VDC |
  +--------------------------------+----------------------------+

 Input Characteristics
 ---------------------
Each signal received by the drive must have the following input
characteristics when measured at the drive connector:

  +--------------------------------+----------------------------+
  |Signal Assertion | 0.0 VDC to 0.8 VDC |
  +--------------------------------+----------------------------+
  |Minimum Total Input Load | -0.4ma at 0.4 VDC |

 Functional Description
 ----------------------
The Astec series of disk drives contains all necessary mechanical
and electronic parts to interpret control signals, position the
recording heads over the desired track, read and write data, and
provide a contaminant free environment for the heads and disks.

 Read/Write and Control Electronics
 ----------------------------------
One integrated circuit is mounted within the sealed enclosure in
close proximity to the read/write heads. Its function is to provide
head selection, read pre-amplification, and write drive circuitry.

The single microporcessor-controlled circuit card provides the re-
 maining electronic functions which include:

        - Read/Write Circuitry
        - Rotary Actuator Control
        - Interface Control
        - Spin Speed Control
        - Dynamic Braking

At Power Down, the heads are automatically retracted to the inner
diameter of the disk, and are parked and latched on a landing zone
that is inside the data tracks.

 Drive Mechanism
 ---------------
A brushless DC direct drive motor rotates the spindle at 3575 rpm.
The motor/spindle assembly is dynamically balanced to provide minimal
mechanical runout to the disks. A dynamic brake is used to provide a
fast stop to the spindle motor and return the heads to the landing
 zone when power is removed.

 Air Filtration System
 ---------------------
Within the sealed enclosure, a 0.3 micron provides a clean environ-
ment to the heads and disks.

 Head Positioning Mechanism
 --------------------------
The Read/Write heads are supported by a mechanism coupled to a voice
 coil actuator.

 Read/Write Heads and Disks
 --------------------------
Data is recorded on 95mm diameter disk through 3370 type heads.

 Error Correction
 ----------------
The Astec series of disk drives performs internal error correction.
The six-byte error correction polynominal is capable of correcting
one error bursts with a maximum of 8 bits per 512-byte block.

 Reliability and Maintenance
 ---------------------------
MTBF 50,000 hours (POH); population is minimum
                          of 100 units.
 MTTR 10 minutes typical
