 SCSI ID
 -------
 NOTE:
There are two identical groups of address jumpers on the Device
Electronics board; use either group for address selection but not
 both at the same time.

Up to sixteen devices (the host and fifteen targets) can be attached
 to the SCSI Bus.

ID jumpers ID0, ID1, ID2, ID3, are used to assign one of sixteen
SCSI ID bits (0-15) to the drive.

In multiple-device systems, each drive must have its own unique ID.

 Input signal asserted
  Drive is write protected.

A dash character (-) at the end of a signal name indicates it is
asserted at the low level (active low) and negated at the high level.

 Spindle Synchronization
 -----------------------
The Rotational Position Locking field (MODE SELECT command, Page Code
04h) is used to specify spindle synchronization operation.

Unsynchronized: If the drive is set to Unsynchronized (RPL = 00b), it
 ignores the SLAVE SYNC signal.

Slave: If the drive is set to Slave (RPL = 01b), it does not generate
the MASTER SYNC signal or the SLAVE SYNC signal but synchronizes its
index to the SLAVE SYNC signal supplied by an external source.

Master: If the drive is set to Master (RPL = 10b), it generates the
SLAVE SYNC output signal for use directly by the slave drives.

Master Control: If the drive is set to Master Control (RPL = 11b), it
generates the MASTER SYNC signal. This output is used by the
controller to generate the SLAVE SYNC signal for the slaves.

For the Option Jumper Block, the even-numbered pins opposite SSYNC
and MSYNC are the ground-return lines for the corresponding signals.

 Dimensions and Mounting
 -----------------------
The drive uses industry-standard mounting For 3 1/2-inch 1-inch high,
 Winchester disk drives.

Recommended orientation is vertical on either side, or horizontal
with the Device Electronics board down; other mounting orientations
 may be used.

No matter what mounting orientation is used, Micropolis specifies
that the maximum HDA casting temperature not exceed 60*C (140*F).

In order to achieve the HDA casting temperature specified above,
forced air flow, around the HDA and Device Electronics board, may be
required. For recommended air-flow cooling, refer to the following
 table:

   Air Flow | Air Temperature
   ---------+----------------
   180 LFPM*| 25*C (77*F) * Linear Feet Per Minute
   220 LFPM | 50*C (122*F)

 Mounting Screws
 ---------------
 3 per side 6-32 UNC-2B
 4 on bottom 6-32 UNC-2B

Caution: The mounting screws must be selected so that they do not
penetrate the bottom mounting holes by more than 0.20 inches or the
side mounting holes by more than 0.156 inches. Screws that are too
 long will short to PCBA.

 Interface Electrical Characteristics
 ------------------------------------
Differential interface signals consists of two signal lines denoted
 +SIGNAL and -SIGNAL.

A signal is defined as true when the +SIGNAL is more positive than
 the -SIGNAL.

A signal is defined as false when the -SIGNAL is more positive than
 the +SIGNAL.

Differential drivers and receivers allow a maximum cable length of
 25 meters.

Signal transmission requires a single 68-conductor cable.

A characteristic impedance of 100 ( 10%) ohms is recommended for
unshielded flat or twisted-pair ribbon cable.

A minimum conductor size of 28 AWG should be employed to minimize
noise effects and ensure proper distribution of optional terminator
 power.

A stub length of no more than 0.2 meters is allowed off the main-
line interconnection withinn any connected equipment.

  a. Input Characteristics

Each of the drive's signal receivers has the following
characteristics when measured at the interface connector.

I(input current on either input) = 2.0 milliamps, max.

     NOTE
These characteristics include both receivers and passive
     drivers.

This requirement is met withh the input voltage varying between
-7V and +12V, with power either on or off, and with hysteresis
     equaling 35 millivolts, minimum.

  b. Output Characteristics

Each driven signal has the following characteristics when
     measured at the interface connector.

VOL (low-level output voltage) = 1.7V max. at IOL
     where IOL = 55 milliamps

VOH (high-level output voltage) = 2.7V minimum at IOH
     where IOH = -55 milliamps

VOD (differential voltage) = 1.0V minimum, with common-mode
voltage ranges from -7 to +12

VOL and VOH are measured between the output terminal and the
     SCSI device's logic ground reference.

  c. Terminator Power (TERMPWR at Pin 17, 18, 51, and 52)

Terminator Power has the following requirements:

     V(TERM) = 4.25 VDC to 5.25 VDC

1000 milliamps minimum source drive capability, with 1.0 amp
recommended current limiting (e.g., a fuse).

1.0-milliamp maximum bus loading (except for the purposes of
providing power to an internal terminator).

The drive provides keyed connectors to prevent accidental
grounding or misconnection of terminator power.

 Temperature Measurement
 -----------------------
Micropolis specifies the maximum HDA casting temperature to be 60*C
(140*F). Not exceeding this temperature will ensure that the head-to-
media interface never exceeds its temperature limit.

MICROPL. 4221WD PRODUCT DESCRIPTION 110885 REV. A 3/95

 Description
 -----------
This Product Description describes the Micropolis model 4221WD Rigid
Disk drive. The drive is a member of the TAURUS 2 family of
 high-performance, 3 1/2-inch, 1-inch high Rigid Disk Drives.

This drive provide OEMs with random-access, high-speed, data
storage and meet the needs of diverse applications environments.

The drive is compatible with the "ANSI CCS" version and the "SCSI-2"
version of the industry-standard Small Computer System Interface
 (SCSI) specification.

 Some Features of the Drive
 --------------------------
 - Positive media protection is achieved during spin down (due to a
STOP UNIT command or power off) by automatically retracting and
locking the positioner in a data-free landing zone.

 - N-Segment Read-Ahead algorithm improves read performance by
allowing many accesses to be serviced from the cache buffer (512K).

 - Optional, Write-Behind Caching provides dramatic improvement in
write performance by appending multiple write commands per disk
   revolution.

 - In-Line Defect Management (sector slipping) provides maximum
   throughput.

 - Data Integrity is ensured with CRC through the buffer, 126-bit
Reed-Solomon ECC on-the-fly, and automatic retries using servo and
   data strobe offsets.

 Media Defects
 -------------
Media defects are physical characteristics of the media which result
in repetitive read errors when a functional drive is operated within
 specified operating conditions.

At the time of manufacture, a media test system evaluates every
drive and identifies each media defect location. The defective
areas are identified by head address (HD), cylinder address (CYL),
and number of bytes from Index (BFI).

The list of manufacturer-found defects is stored on the drive in a
reserved, write-protected area accessible by the SCSI controller.
This list is known as the MDL (Manufacturers Defect List) or PList
(Primary Defect List). The MDL entries can be mapped out (reassigned)
automatically at format time by appropriate use of the format control
 parameter bits.

 Recording Media
 ---------------
Aluminium disks, each 95 millimeters (3 1/2 inches) in diameter, are
mounted on the spindle assembly. The recording surface on each disk
is a thin coating of magnetic material, with a carbon over-coat to
 protect that surface.

 Braking
 -------
The heads contact an area of the disk surface which is not used for
data storage when the disk are not spinning and during start and
stop cycles. Dynamic braking is used to stop the spindle quickly.

 Air Filtration System
 ---------------------
The drives are designed to provide contamination control within the
HDA throughout the life of the drive with zero maintenance. Air
within the HDA is continuously recirculated and filtered through a
high efficiency filter. A breather filter protects the HDA from in-
ward contamination migration during air pressure changes associated
with drive temperature or atmospheric pressure variations.

 Loadable Code
 -------------
The drive can electronically download SCSI Firmware via the SCSI
 interface.
