Drive is shipped with an ID of 6. Choose address settings according
 to specific installation requirements.

 ID Setting
 ----------
The SCSI bus supports connection of up to seven devices, but
communication can occur only between two SCSI devices at a time. Each
device has an assigned ID bit that establishes device priority on the
SCSI bus. When two SCSI devices communicate, one acts as an initiator
and the other as a target. The initiator originates an operation and
the target performs the operation specified by the initiator. An
initiator can address up to seven other logical units (LUNs)
attched to one target. The drive has only one logical unit attached
 (LUN=0).

The drive can be addressed through switches:

      SW302
 SW2 SW3 SW4
OFF OFF OFF ID 0 Lowest
OFF OFF ON ID 1 .
OFF ON OFF ID 2 .
OFF ON ON ID 3 .
ON OFF OFF ID 4 .
ON OFF ON ID 5 .
ON ON OFF ID 6 Highest

Alternately, the drive can be addressed through pins A5, A6, and A7.
(Grounding a pin's signal enables its corresponding address bit.)
When this method is used, SW2, SW3, and SW4 on switch block 302 must
 be set to OFF.

 Pin A5 Sel 0 (LSB)
 Pin A6 Sel 1
 Pin A7 Sel 2 (MSB)

Each 25000 Series SCSI drive is shipped from the factory with an ID
of 6. This ID designation assures sufficient switches are available
for any address except 7 (which is usually reserved for the host
 system).

 Terminator Power Selection
 --------------------------
This drive does not supply terminator power.

 SW301 Parity Disable Option
 ----------------------------
This option is enabled by the default setting (OFF) of SW2 on switch
block 301. To disable this option, set SW2 to ON.

 SW301 Power-Up Option
 ----------------------
SW1 OFF Wait for Start Command
The disk drive will not spin-up until the initiator issues a
START/STOP UNIT command with the start bit equal to one.
ON Start When Power is Applied
The spin motor starts when power is applied.

 Recommended Mounting Configuration
 ----------------------------------
Maxtor 25000 Series drive design allows greater shock tolerance
than that afforded by larger, heavier drives. The drive may be
mounted in any attitude. Mount the drive with size 3 mm screws with
0.381 (0.15 inch) maximum penetration. Allow adequate ventilation
to the drive to ensure reliable operation over the operating
 temperature range.

 Physical Interface

 Interface Termination
 ---------------------
The drive does not supply on-board termination. The user is
responsible for termination at both ends of the bus.

The last physical device on the SCSI bus must be terminated. Any
drive or other SCSI device connected between the host and the device
at the end of the terminator must not be terminated. The 25252S does
 not supply on-board termination.

 Active Negation
 ---------------
In configurations where the SCSI cable measures less than two feet
and power consumption is critical (as in battery operation), the host
may be terminated with pull-ups to enable the target active negation
 feature.

 Sector Size
 -----------
The disk drive is fixed at (and factory-formatted with) 512-byte
 sectors.

128K Data Buffer and Look-Ahead Cache
 -------------------------------------
The target device anticipates sequential reads by reading to fill the
buffer, making data immediately available to new READ commands. By
termporarily placing small amounts of data in high-speed memory,
cache with look-ahead read decreases access time to sequential data
in the drive. Read-ahead performs all the required seeks and head
switching needed to fill the buffer with sequential data.

 The 25252S has a 128K data buffer.

 Buffering Scheme
 ----------------
The drive has a 128K circular First-In-First-Out (FIFO) buffer. The
buffer controller allows simultaneous transfer either:

 1. to the drive from the initiator, or
 2. from the drive to the initiator.

 How Look-ahead Cache Functions
 ------------------------------
In the absence of an error, corrected data, or an interrupt command,
the drive caches not only requested sectors, but "looks ahead" and
caches data from the sector that follow.(Look-ahead cache reads
across track boundaris.) The "look-ahead" feature prepares the drive
to transfer cached data when the host request it and so prevents
 access time delays.

 Caching of sectors continues until:

 1. an error occurs,
 2. a host command inconsistent with sequential reads is received.

Commands are interrupt driven, so if the drive is performing a
look-ahead cache when a non-sequential command is received, it will
stop cache and process the command. Consequently, look-ahead cache
operations do not add overhead to command processing.

Resets and Write or Write Long commands to any of the cached sectors
 invalidate the whole cache.

 Air Filtration System
 ---------------------
All 25000 Series drives are designed to operate in a typical office
environment with minimum environmental control. Over the life of the
drive, a 0.3 micron filter and breather filter (located within the
HDA) maintain a clean environment to the heads and disks.

 Read/Write Electronics
 ----------------------
An integrated circuit mounted within the sealed enclosure (near the
read/write heads) provides one of six head selection (depending on
the model), read preamplification, and write drive circuitry.

 Read/Write Heads and Disks
 --------------------------
Low-mass, low-force thin film read/write heads record data on the
2.5" diameter disk(s). Maxtor uses a sputterred thin-film media, with
glass/canasite substrate on all disks for 25000 Series drives.

 Automatic Headpark and Lock
 ---------------------------
Immediately following power-down, dynamic braking of the spinning
disks delays momentarily and lets the heads move to an inner
mechanical stop. A small fixed magnet holds the heads in place as
the disk spin down. The heads are release only upon reapplication of
 power.

 Acoustic Noise
 --------------
Averages are recorded during Idle mode.

      Sound power (per ISO/DIS 7779) 3.4 belA

      Sound Pressure
(1 meter perpendicular to top cover) 30 dBA

      Sound Pressure
(seated operator position, per ISO 7779) 32.5 dBA

 Drive Mechanism
 ---------------
A brushless DC direct-drive motor rotates the spindle at 4,247 RPM
 ( 0.1%).

The dynamically balanced motor/spindle assembly ensures minimal
mechanical runout of the disk(s). A dynamic brake provides a fast
stop to the spindle motor upon power removal. The speed tolerance
includes motor performance and motor circuit tolerances.

 Voice Coil Actuator
 -------------------
25000 Series drives employ a rotary voice coil actuator which
consists of a moving coil, actuator arm assembly, and stationary
 magnets.

The actuator moves on a low-mass, low-friction center shaft. The low
friction generated contributes to fast average access time and low
 power consumption.

 Driver/Receiver Requirements
 ----------------------------
Any device driving the disk inputs should be of the open collector
type, capable of sinking at least 48 mA at a voltage level less than
 0.5V DC (7438 or equivalent).

Devices receiving 25000 Series disk drive outputs should be SCHMITT
trigger type (74LS14, 74LS240, or equivalent) to improve noise
immunity. The initiator should not load the bus with more than one
standard low-power Schotky transistor-transistor logic (LSTTL) input
 load per line.

 Interface Connector
 -------------------
All 25000 Series drives have a 40-position header connector (J4)
comprised of two rows of twenty male pins on 2 mm centers. Option
connector J2 is an 8-position header comprised of two rows of four
male pins on 2 mm centers. The drive may connect directly to the
host. It can also accomodate a cable connection.

 Electrical Description
 ----------------------
All signal levels are TTL compatible. A logic 1 is > 2.0 volts. A
logic 0 ranges from 0.00 volts to 0.70 volts.

 Interface Cable
 ---------------
 Use a 1 mm flat ribbon cable with a 2 x 25 2 mm IDC connector (for
example, Dupont PN 69764-050 or Molex PN 87259-5016). Do not power
more than one drive from a single 1 mm cable. Alternately, a standard
0.1 inch SCSI flat ribbon cable equipped with an appropriate 2.5"
disk drive adapter may be used.

The striped edge of this cable represents pin 1 and must be oriented
towards pin 1 at the drive connector and at the host connector.

 Electrical Interface
 --------------------
SCSI uses single-ended drivers and receivers which allows a maximum
cable length of 22 feet (6 meters) from the first to the last device
(up to 7 devices) on the bus. The drive interfaces to the SCSI host
via a 40-pin keyed ribbon cable.

All signals driven by the drive are open collector and have the
output characteristics shown in the following table.
  +-------------------------+-------------------+
  |Signal True | 0.0 VDC to 0.8 VDC|
  +-------------------------+-------------------+
  |Maximum Total Input Load | -0.4 mA @ 0.4 VDC |

 Introduction
 ------------
The Maxtor 25000 Series are 2.5" random access storage devices using
on-board SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) controller. Maxtor
engineers have applied recent advances in hard drive technology to
the design and manufacture of these drives. Reduced size, increased
durability, and low power consumption make them especially well
suited to notebook, laptop, and desktop applications.

 Zone 1 = 3.125MB Zone 5 = 2.361MB
 Zone 2 = 3.021MB Zone 6 = 2.222MB
 Zone 3 = 2.778MB Zone 7 = 2.083MB
 Zone 4 = 2.708MB Zone 8 = 2.014MB

 Defect Management
 -----------------
REASSIGN commands push data down within a defect management zone
(DMZ) to maintain sequential order and assure maximum performance.

The 25252S has 6 spare sectors per DMZ; they are located at the end
 of each cylinder.

Upon detection of an error in a sector, execution of a REASSIGN
command flags that sector as bad; the next sequential sector is than
 used.

 Power-Up Sequence
 -----------------
Once power is applied, the actuator lock automatically disengages.
The drive then spins up, performs a recalibration sequence to track
zero, and becomes ready in 5 seconds. The drive executes its recali-
bration sequence whenever power is applied or the SCSI START/STOP
command is invoked via the SCSI bus.

 Error Conditions
 ----------------
Under any one of several error conditions, the drive changes to BUS
FREE without correctly terminating the command: no DISCONNECT or
COMMAND COMPLETE message is sent. The drive clears all information
regarding the command (except any sense data) and does not attempt to
reconnect, or in any other way terminate the command. The initiator
must assume this is a catastrophic failure and return the error to
 the system software.

When this condition occurs, sense data may or may not be valid. Sense
data is valid when a REQUEST SENSE command sent by the initiator is
returned with a sense key/error code other than 00h/00h.

Set the drive type in the AT BIOS setup to "not installed". NOTE:
this intelligent drive will identify itself to the system and SCSI
 host adapter.

 1:1 Interleave
 --------------
All 25000 Series SCSI drives operate with a 1:1 interleave, so
"optimizing" interleave for a host system in unnecessary. Regardless
of host system speed, the drive's full-track buffer allows all disk
transfers to occur at a 1:1 rate. Since 25000 Series drives always
format with interleave 1, they override any interleave specified in
 the operating system's FORMAT command.

 Self-Test Sequence
 ------------------
The self-test sequence is executed upon drive power-up to verify
basic hardware component integrity. This series of tests is not a
 complete hardware diagnostic.

During the first 250 milliseconds of self-test, the drive does not
respond to a SELECTION phase on the SCSI bus. During this time, the
drive completes remaining self-test sequences, initializes the SCSI
circuit, and enables SCSI interrupts. If UNIT ATTENTION is enabled
(default is disabled), in Mode Page 0 the drive would respond to
selection with CHECK CONDITION status and the appropriate sense data
(such as: UNIT ATTENTION, POWER ON/RESET condition). The following
table describes the events comprising self-test.

MAXTOR SCSI INSTALLATION

GENERIC INSTALLATION PROCEDURE FOR A SCSI DRIVE
   -----------------------------------------------------------

 1. Install a 50 pin ribbon connector making sure pin 1, which
can be identified by the striped edge of the cable, is closest
to the power connector on the drive.

 2. Install a DC power cable to the back of the drive.

 3. Verify the SCSI ID selection.
Note: SCSI ID usually needs to be set to 0 to be the boot drive.
The last physical device on the SCSI bus must be terminated.
Any other drive or SCSI device connected between the host and
the device at the end of the bus must not be terminated.

 4. Apply power to the computer.

4a. When memory test is complete go into your system's Standard
      C-MOS set-up.
(Note: There are various ways to get into C-MOS set-up,
please refer to system's manual for instuctions.)

4b. Set the drive type to "Not Installed". This intelligent drive
will identify itself to the SCSI host adapter.

 5. Boot from a DOS diskette that has FDISK.EXE and FORMAT.COM on
it. At the A> prompt type in FDISK. At the menu options select
option 1 to create a DOS partition. Another menu will appear and
from those options choose 1 to create a Primary DOS partition.
Select yes to make 1 large partition and it will automatically
become active. Then escape from FDISK.

 6. At the A> prompt type in FORMAT C:/S
This does a high-level format on the drive and transfers the
system files in order for the drive to be bootable.
(Note: Maxtor SCSI drives are low-level formatted at the factory)

 7. The drive is now bootable. As a test remove the DOS diskette
from A and press reset to re-boot the computer, a C> should be
displayed, the drive is now ready for operation.
